About The Defensive Edge

Founded and led by Ian Barteaux — who holds a Bachelor of Physical Education and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta — The Defensive Edge operates out of Sherwood Park and focuses on developing defensemen and forwards through a blend of on-ice sessions and structured dry-land training. The programme targets habits, speed, stamina, flexibility, and mental preparation as interconnected elements rather than isolated skills.

Offerings include group ice sessions, weight training, the Adult Edge programme, a dedicated Defensemen Summer Camp, and The Defensive Edge Training Programme. A reviewed parent whose U13 group used the programme through a full season highlighted the gym work and the emphasis on proper movement, stretching, and mental readiness as standout components of the experience.

We used DE as part of our 2024 (U13) seasonal development both with regular workout/gym sessions, and a regular on-ice skills development cadence. The strength training and teaching the players how to work out the right way, to stretch and roll and mentally prepare was a key differentiator in strength and bonding that developed throughout the year leading to the team’s ability to compete harder and for longer and to over come challenges that might have otherwise caused them to bend and break. The in-ice sessions were equally effective and well-run allowing technical development (passing, skating, shooting, tactic, strategy) which complemented our regular practice cadence very well. Ian is very collaborative and able to quickly pivot to the needs of the team/athletes at a moments notice during our pre-practice huddle where we would often deviate from the ‘curriculum’ to address short term deficiencies on the team front. Ian and Mark work very well with athletes of all ages and levels of development, if you haven’t already and are looking for a development provider you should give them a call and see for yourself. I would give them 1-star if that was the best rating, so instead they get 5!
